Feeling Overwhelmed

Hey Naturalistas!

The past couple of weeks have been pretty busy with work, school, mom duties, being a wife and so on.  School is now back in session and as I started reading the kids' requirements, I started to feel overwhelmed thinking about everything that I had to do and events that were coming up. Usually, I try to remain calm and think of myself as super mom, but lets face it I'm human and I have my days where I get overwhelmed and afraid too. I want to encourage every mom that you are not alone and that we are in this together. As I started to feel myself get into a rut, I quickly reminded myself that God will guide and give me wisdom with any circumstance I may come across. Here are a few tips that will help you feel better and stress free!!

1. SET ASIDE PRAYER TIME ( Prayer is so important! Without prayer, I wouldn't be able to do half of the things I do. This also builds your relationship with God. I know it can seem challenging finding prayer time, but the beautiful thing about God is that you can talk to him anytime. He's always there and waiting to hear from you. I talk to him constantly, but I love our time in the morning on my way to work.)

2.  STAY ORGANIZED - (Staying organized makes life a lot easier. Making sure everything has a place is key, so I like to incorporate that in my home so it can stay tidy and neat. I also like to keep a calendar and planning guide to write down important dates.)

3. MEAL PLANNING (I'm always talking about this one and I guarantee it will help you so much and save lots of money. You and your family will eat healthier which is always great!)

4. KEEP A CLEAN KITCHEN ( I'm not sure about you, but keeping a clean kitchen makes my mood feel so much better. I can cook better and relax more. I like to clean as I cook and that way I'm not in the kitchen the entire time.)

5. JUST SAY NO ( This one is a hard one for me. How can 2 letters be so difficult to say, but it is hard for me to say no sometimes. You can't do it all and that's okay. Believe it or not, people do understand.

I hope these tips can help you not feel as overwhelmed and remember to take a break and breathe. All we can do is take one day at a time. Enjoy each day to the fullest and do your very best.

Celebrating my Mom's 60th Birthday

Hey guys!!

I am sitting here thinking about the great time I had with my family.  Back in January, I decided that I wanted to plan my Mom a 60th birthday celebration in Destin, Florida. Everything turned out perfect! It was such a blessing to be able to bless my Mom with a relaxing stay at a beach house with all her family. We created wonderful memories and realized the importance of family.

My Mom has taught me a lot, but most importantly she help me develop a relationship with the Lord. We have gone through a lot and the strength she has is amazing. I pray that I can be as strong as her and carry myself with so much grace as she did. Every person that meets her gets attached to her sweet spirit. She is definitely the epitome of a Proverbs 31 woman. I love her so much and so grateful and blessed that my siblings and I were able to celebrate her at the beach!!!

Staying on budget with Grocery Shopping

Hey Naturalistas!!!!

I have several posts on grocery shopping and that just goes to show that I have found a love for budgeting and grocery shopping. Grocery shopping is the main category that usually throws my budget off, but I have finally found a way to stay on track.  It's all about planning and prioritizing and there's really no way around it. I have learned that setting a day for grocery shopping will help you start on the right path. Before I really stuck to a budget, I would do all of my grocery shopping at one store and realized that I was spending more money on certain items. I never looked at sale ads and every now and then tried to have a coupon. For a family of 4, I would spend close to 900.00 a month and I knew something had to give. Below, I will share  6 tips that can help you stay under budget with your groceries.

Tip 1- Set a Day ( I can't stress this enough, when you set a day you will plan for that day so you can be ready to do what you need to do. I need to do that with this blog, but that's another post.)

Tip 2-Check your Fridge and Pantry  (This is a major key to saving money. I hate when I purchase duplicate items. This will also help you stay organize with your list.)

Tip 3- Plan your Meals off what you have in your Home (Before you try new recipes or just have a taste for something different, start with the ingredients that you have on hand first. You can cut your grocery bill in half with the items that you have at home. I love when all my meals are covered and all I have to get are snacks, breakfast, and lunch items.)

Tip 4- Make a Grocery List ( Whatever you do, before you go into a store please make a grocery list and don't go in the store hungry! If you don't stick to the list, you will definitely go over budget and come back with items you probably shouldn't eat anyway. First, I like to write my meals for dinner on the back of the sheet and then start my list from there. I like to categorize my list using breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner.  This will help you make sure that everything is covered.

Tip 5- Shop at Different Stores- I use to despise people who would shop at a variety of stores for one grocery trip, but it really makes sense especially if the stores are relatively close to each other. I like to shop at Costco, Kroger, Sprouts, Aldi's, and Publix.  I know everyone can't do this, but in my area these stores are very close to each other except Costco. Costco is closer to my job, so I like to go there on my lunch and I have a big cooler in my trunk to keep the groceries cool. I like to shop at Costco once a month.  Every Wednesday, I like to check the sale ads and I also start my  grocery list. I try to buy according to what's on sale.  Shopping this way has really helped me trim down my grocery budget and most times I feel like I get more items.

Tip 6- Plan your Meals for 2 weeks or More- Since I have started shopping at Costco, I like to plan my meals for more than just a week. I never thought I would be able to do this, but this has really helped me save. So, I will shop at Costco once a month and in between the week, I will get more fruits and vegetables along with a small amount of snacks.

Update and a Review on Camille Rose Twisting Butter

Hey Naturalistas!!!!

First of all, Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful moms out there!!  It's been awhile, but we have had a lot  going on and now I have been learning about YouTube! I am so excited about it and I believe this will give you a better visual of how I do my hair as well as other things I like to do for my household. I will have tutorials, grocery hauls, recipes, family vlogs, and more! I'm also working on my son's show called the Nathan Nathan show that you can watch right now!! These were some of our goals for the year of 2017 and I am glad to see them come to fruition. So stay tuned for my channel called Domestic Naturalista!!!

On to other news, It's time to finally give my review on the Camille Rose twisting butter. I actually thought this product would be a thicker creamy  substance more like the As I am twisting butter, but to me it has the consistency of a leave in conditioner. I actually love the way it helps detangle my hair along with the Generic Paul Mitchell and Castor oil. On a scale from 1 to 10, I will give this 8 stars. I will definitely pick this up again.

Aloe Vera Pre-poo Treatment

Hey Naturalistas!!!

It's been awhile, but I have finally stumbled across a great way to restore moisture and remove those dead skin cells on the scalp! I was watching Naptural 85 YouTube channel and she did a tutorial on how to use aloe vera for your scalp. Once I saw that, I had to try it and my scalp felt amazing!! I regret not doing this a long time ago, but my scalp is going to love me now!! I know we focus on the ends of our hair a lot to retain length, but it's also important to focus on the scalp. The scalp is where everything starts, so we want to make sure we keep it clean and moisturized as well.

Aloe vera contains proteolytic enzymes which repairs dead skin cells on the scalp. It leaves your hair so smooth and shiny. Aloe vera also promotes growth, prevents itching on the scalp, and reduces dandruff and of course conditions your hair. Aloe vera also has a chemical make up similar to that of keratin and it rejuvenates the hair with its own nutrients, giving it more elasticity and preventing breakage.

I decided to do a prepoo treatment on my hair as well as my daughter's hair and our hair thanked us for it!! As soon as I applied the aloe vera to my scalp, you could tell immediately that it was doing it's job. I want to share you with you a step by step process on how to do a Aloe vera pre-poo treatment.

  • First, cut 2 or 4 slices of aloe vera and then wrap the rest up and store in the fridge. It can last in the fridge for 30 days. Make sure you cut the sides off. 
  • Mix 1/4 cup of castor oil and olive oil in a bowl.
  • Section hair into 4 to 6 sections, and apply the slice to the scalp. Make sure you rub it in and massage. Make sure the aloe vera touches each part in that section.
  • Next, take the hair and apply the oil as well as a leave in and detangle the section.
  • Once you're done, twist the section and start on the next section. If you notice the aloe vera is drying up, pierce with your finger and more gel will appear. Continue to massage your scalp with the aloe vera.
  • After your hair is all twisted up, you can place your bonnet on and wash your hair the next day or you can leave it in for about 30 minutes to an hour. I decided to leave it in over night, but for my daughter I left it in for about an hour before I washed her hair. You will notice how shiny and moisturized your hair is. It feels great!  

First things first and that is to get an Aloe vera plant! I picked this up from Sprouts!!

Cut maybe 2 or 3 slices and then wrap up what's left and store in the fridge.

Here's the good stuff!!! I'm so ready for another mask!

Spicy Shrimp Zucchini Pasta

I purchased my Veggetti Pro from Amazon for 19.00, but you can find one a lot cheaper. I love this one!

I am excited to share this yummy recipe with you using Zucchini noodles!! For a while, I have been wanting to try a gadget that would allow me to create veggie noodles instead of using pasta. I finally decided to purchase a gadget called the Veggie Pro! I absolutely love it and it's not a hassle at all! As I turned the knob, I had  perfect spirals for my veggie noodles.  It gives you the option to make your noodles thick or thin which I love!  This recipe is so simple and delicious! This is the type of meal you use when you want to impress people with your cooking skills! LOL! I hope you enjoy!

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • ½ lb. peeled & deveined shrimp (41/50 size)
  • 1 (15. oz.) can diced tomatoes
  • ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Freshly cracked pepper to taste
  • Handful fresh parsley
  • 2 zucchini
  • A gadget to assist with spiraling your vegetable

    1. First things first and that is to spiral your zucchini and leave in a bowl. Add the butter and olive oil to the skillet. After that, mince the garlic while waiting for the butter to melt.
    2. Rinse the shrimp with cool water and allow the excess water to drain away. Add the shrimp and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté the shrimp and garlic for 3-5 minutes, or just until the shrimp turns opaque and slightly pink (no longer grey and translucent). Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set it aside until later.
    3. Add the can of tomatoes with juices and zucchini to the skillet, along with the crushed red pepper flakes, salt, and some freshly cracked pepper. Stir to combine and let the sauce simmer over medium heat for about five minutes.
    4. Toss to coat in the sauce. Add the cooked shrimp back to the skillet and toss to combine with the zucchini noodles. Taste and adjust the salt if needed.
    5. Roughly chop a handful of parsley leaves and sprinkle over top before serving.

    Meal Planning and Grocery Shopping

    As a wife and mom, the responsibility of grocery shopping and meal planning tends to fall on us. In the beginning of my marriage, I have to be honest and say that this was my least favorite thing to do as a wife. I didn't know how to really cook in the beginning, so going to the grocery store wasn't priority on my list. After I had my son, I realized that things had to change and I wanted to make sure my family was eating a well balanced meal. Now fast forward to now and who would have thought that meal planning and groceries are all I think about now! Yeah, I know that's a little weird, but I love planning meals and going to different stores that has the best deals. It's amazing the amount of produce you can get when there is a deal going on. With that being said, I want to share my routine and tips to get you started! Your family will love you for it and you will feel accomplished!!!

    • Pick your grocery shopping day- We set wash days for our hair, so why not  set a day for the grocery store. My day is Friday. I love to get my groceries before the weekend begins. Even my children know that Friday is the day! Kids love to have a routine, but that's another post for another time! :)
    • Check your sale ads (Usually on Wednesday)- Wednesdays are the days where I check the sale ads from Publix, Aldi's, Kroger, and Sprouts. This will determine where I get different food items. I like to start planning my meals and writing my grocery list on this day, which is also  the day where I like to walk through around the home to what is needed.
    • Create meals with what you have first- I am still trying to get better with this! You can save so much money with what you have in the home.  This will expand your creativity and also lower that grocery bill. You will be amazed at what you can make!
    • Organize your grocery list- I like to organize my list by store and I also like to make a breakfast, snack, lunch, and dinner list to make sure that everything is covered.
    • Save time by ordering your groceries online- I am so thankful that my favorite store which is Kroger has allowed their customers to also shop online. It's similar to Walmart, but there is a fee for using the service. I really don't mind the fee when it comes to my time and I also love the fact that you can order the groceries on the same day. This has also allowed me to make sure I stay within budget. I stick to my list and it gives me the total beforehand, so if I notice I'm close to overspending, I can remove items.

    Time to get back to the Basics

    Since we're writing goals and trying to get off to a great start, I feel this is a perfect time to get back to the basics of healthy hair. I have really seen changes with my hair that I am not happy with. I got comfortable and just didn't care as much. I regret doing that, and now I'm ready to make a change and really see what my hair is capable of doing. Once I achieved waist length, I gave up on the health of the hair. Growing hair is great, but the health of your hair as well as retaining length is what's important. Not only will I focus on my hair, but as you all know I have a daughter with the same amount of hair that needs TLC as well. I honestly feel I let it go because of working with 2 heads, but that's another story. Creating a schedule is the beginning of healthy hair. This will allow me to make sure I give the hair the nourishment it needs on that day and everything else will follow through. Below are the steps that I will take for my hair.

    Co-Wash Day- Every other Sunday ( I will section the hair into 6 sections and use castor oil and a conditioner to detangle the hair before I actually step into the shower to wash the hair). I will apply the conditioner to the section and use my fingers to gently detangle each section as well as massage the scalp. The goal is to be able to glide my fingers through my hair, so the conditioner needs to be a thick creamy substance. ( Clarify the hair once a month with a sulfate free shampoo).

    Deep Condition with Castor Oil- Once hair is washed, I will use a quality natural conditioner for my deep treatment as well as the castor oil. I will apply the conditioner to each section like before and also apply the castor oil to my scalp and ends. Once I have covered each section, I will use a plastic cap or plastic grocery bag ( you know how it is), and sit under the dryer for 20 to 30 minutes. Once that is done, I will rinse the hair with cool hair. I will alternate with a protein conditioner every other Sunday.

    StyleFor styling the hair, it really depends on what I will have to do that day. On days where I know I won't be going anywhere, I will plait my hair into 6 braids. Most of the time, I wear my hair in a bun for a couple of days before I wear my hair in a braid out or twist out. After that, I will plait my hair with a leave in conditioner, shea butter and castor oil and twirl my ends with the shea butter.  I notice that my braid outs or twist outs has better results with butters and oils. I will also try more protective styles.

    Night- I've always stayed faithful to my satin bonnet and scarf, so I will continue to do that. I also would like to plait or twist my hair every other day if the hair isn't in a protective style. This is something that I have always done, so I will stick to this routine.
